Do you ever reach the end of the week, month, or even the year and realise you haven’t so much as glanced at a book? It happens. Life gets in the way, doesn't it? It's like when you haven’t called your mum or messaged your best friend in ages – oops!
Life today is all about speed, action, and more action. Ironically, we're bombarded with blogs about wellbeing, mindfulness, and self-care. Yet, despite all the tips and tricks, finding time for what’s important—like reading or even texting a friend—often feels impossible. Sound familiar, or is it just me?
Two years ago, I was drowning in a huge global job and couldn't find time for anything I enjoyed. It took a major rethink. The biggest change was leaving my job (but that’s a story for another blog). Smaller tweaks made a real difference. Now, on Sundays, my phone lives in the bedroom, untouched unless absolutely necessary. I also stopped watching TV each night. Instead, I indulge in a long shower or bath, cosy PJ’s, peppermint tea, and a good book. I rediscovered my love for reading—not just squeezing it in on the train, but truly savouring it. Now, after my son is in bed, I read daily and only occasionally switch on the TV.
The phone is the real culprit. I realised I was watching a suspenseful thriller while simultaneously scrolling through Instagram, YouTube Shorts, and Facebook. Hours vanished, all for a few fleeting giggles before moving on to the next video.
So, how can book lovers reclaim their reading time? Here are a few simple tips:
Start small, brag big (but not too big): Aim to read one book this month. Tell everyone on Instagram if you want (guilty!), then put the phone down.
Schedule a date with your book: Put it in your diary. Your commute, lunch break, or even just before bed.
Sneak in some 'me time' before the chaos: Wake up 20 minutes before the kids, grab a coffee, and read. Seriously, it’s a game-changer.
Book, the ultimate accessory: Stash a book in your bag. You never know when you'll find the perfect coffee shop (or wine bar!) to crack it open.
Banish the buzzkills: TV off, phone on silent (or better yet, in another room).
Trade screens for sweet dreams: Reading before bed helps you unwind – and it's way more effective than counting sheep.
Surprise yourself with stories: I know it’s cheeky but a book subscription is the perfect little present to treat yourself to each month.
