Reading lists can be a game-changer for book lovers, but they're not for everyone. Some people prefer to go with the flow, picking up whatever catches their eye in the moment. And that's perfectly okay! As someone who rediscovered reading after motherhood, I've learned that having a little plan can make all the difference.
After my little one came along, my reading life took a nosedive. Sound familiar? I'd sit down with a book, only to realise I'd read the same paragraph five times because my mind was elsewhere. Mum-brain is real, people! I was determined to reclaim my bookworm status, so I set a goal: one book a week. Ambitious, I know! But I don't beat myself up if life throws a curveball – a sick kiddo, a never-ending to-do list, you name it.
So, how did I get back on the reading wagon? Here are a few things that helped me, and might just help you too:
Create a diverse reading list – think "literary buffet": I used to stick to one genre, but that got boring fast. Now, I mix it up! I alternate between a gripping thriller one week and a thought-provoking biography the next. I even dabbled in historical fiction recently and was pleasantly surprised. The point is, don't be afraid to step outside your comfort zone.
Always have the next book ready – avoid the "book hangover": You know that feeling when you finish an amazing book and then...nothing? It's like a literary hangover. So, if I'm reading a series, I make sure to have the next book of the sequel ready. I learned this the hard way after devouring the first book in a trilogy and then having to wait a week for the sequel to arrive. Talk about torture!
Embrace the magic of a book subscription service – the gift that keeps on giving: This is one of my favourites. It's like a little present to myself every month. Plus, they often introduce me to authors and genres I wouldn't normally pick up. I’m not just adding this in because this is an online book subscription business. Promise.
Set aside dedicated reading time – even if it's just a chapter before bed: This is crucial. It's so easy to let reading fall by the wayside when life gets hectic. I try to carve out time before bed, I sleep so much better by not watching TV or setting my phone aside. It helps me wind down and escape into another world for a little while.
Join a book club or online reading community – because talking about books is fun. This has been a game-changer for me. It's so much fun to discuss books with other people who are just as passionate about reading. Plus, it holds me accountable to actually finish the books I start.
Keep a reading journal – your personal literary time capsule: I started doing this a few months ago, and it's been surprisingly rewarding. I jot down my thoughts on each book, favourite quotes, and anything else that strikes me. It's like creating a personal literary time capsule that I can look back on later.
Remember, the goal is to enjoy reading, not to stress about it. So, whether you're a meticulous planner like me or more of a spontaneous book-picker, find a system that works for you and keeps you turning those pages. Would love to hear your thoughts and in the meantime, happy reading.
I totally relate to this! It's the tiredness, I have almost forgotten what a book looks like! 😂
